When experienced school leaders in primary education coach new colleagues, those colleagues settle into the job faster, which reduces the chance of them leaving early. This is reported by the Sectorbestuur Onderwijsarbeidsmarkt (SBO), the Dutch sector board for the education labour market.

The SBO commissioned the labour relations centre CAOP to research the effects and the success factors of coaching by school leaders in primary education. The study was funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education (OCW).

The research shows that new school leaders who are coached by experienced colleagues not only settle in more quickly, but also perform more professionally and feel valued in their work. Coaching means school leaders stay in primary education longer than they otherwise would.

“The Dutch tax authority takes the position that costs incurred for outplacement (which can also be understood as
career coaching, career advice and career guidance) may be entered
under the heading ‘study costs / training expenses’. The study or training must relate
to:

An improvement or change in your financial and economic position:
This concerns study or training with which you extend your knowledge and skills
with a view to improving or changing your financial and
economic position in society. A deduction appears possible for the costs of
outplacement, in so far as you bear them yourself (V-N 2007/2.20).

Maintaining your professional position:
Deductible training expenses also include costs you incur to maintain the knowledge
required for your professional position, or to keep up to date in your field.

Calculation:
Take the study costs and other training expenses for a course you followed yourself.
Then subtract from those costs any reimbursement you received, for example from your
employer. Finally, subtract the € 500 threshold. The resulting amount
is your deduction for study costs or other training expenses.

The tax authority does not define precisely what does and does not count as outplacement.
That makes this deduction a grey area, in which you decide at your own risk, or on the
advice of your tax adviser, what you wish to deduct.

VMBO students are not known for high intrinsic motivation across every lesson. Activating teaching methods change that — as part of a wider approach.

In a special edition of Sardes I came across an interesting article on activating teaching methods in VMBO (pre-vocational secondary education). Perhaps the most important group of all when it comes to adapting teaching to the students in front of you. Without wanting to generalise, let us state the obvious: “the” VMBO student is not exactly known for a high degree of intrinsic motivation to sit through every lesson, particularly lessons that demand a long attention span. In general subjects we often see students struggling to keep up and to get the most out of their learning. We also know that when a VMBO student is genuinely interested, a world opens up in which involvement and attention are suddenly very much present.
With activating teaching methods the student takes an active working attitude, and the day seems to fly by for student and teacher alike.
In his article, René Melisse sets out a number of possibilities, and also a number of conditions.
From Franzen Consultancy I would stress an integrated approach, in which activating teaching is one component. Working together as a team, and thinking jointly about different teaching formats within a learning organisation, are important factors too.
The new examination programmes have to be introduced, and in September 2016 they start at every VMBO school. For many organisations this is a complicated process, given everything the new programmes make possible. As far as we are concerned, this is the moment to hold the organisation up to the light, look at where its strengths lie, and put those to work in an activating organisation where student and teacher alike get going with motivation.

There is a new – fairly damning – report by the American National Council on Teacher Quality about the textbooks used to train teachers in the United States. The essence of the report: the textbooks do not teach teachers what they need to know.

More interesting still is that the researchers focused on 6 proven strategies that work, which often go unmentioned or are examined only briefly in the textbooks. What are those 6 strategies, and do you have them?

The first two help students take in new information:

Linking images to words.
Young or old, everyone takes in information along two primary routes – auditory (for the spoken word) and visual (for the written word and graphic representation). Students learn more when new information is explained in both ways.

Linking abstract concepts to concrete representations.
Teachers should give concrete examples that clarify the overarching ideas, and also explain how the examples and the big ideas connect to one another.

The next two make sure students connect different pieces of information, deepening their understanding:

Asking probing questions.
Asking students ‘why’, ‘how’, ‘what if’ and ‘how do you know’ obliges them to clarify their knowledge of the key ideas and to link those ideas together.

Alternating worked examples with problems students have to solve themselves.
Explanation alongside a worked solution helps students grasp the underlying principles, so they move beyond mere problem-solving procedures.

The last two help students remember what they have learned:

Spacing out practice.
Students should practise material several times after learning it, with each practice session or review separated by weeks or even months.

Assessing in order to strengthen retention.
Beyond the value of formative assessment (helping a teacher decide what to teach) and summative assessment (establishing what students have learned), assessment that prompts students to recall previously learned information helps that information stick.

A workshop for teachers and workplace mentors in (V)MBO, centred on working with the current generation (16 – 25 years).
175 staff from the health and welfare sector have already taken this workshop.

The core aim of the workshop is to build familiarity with, and recognition of, today’s youth culture, followed by practical pointers that those involved can put to use straight away.

The workshop covers a number of themes, including:
– Development of the young person in this group
– Mobile phone culture
– How your own behaviour is mirrored in the behaviour of the young person
– The student’s need for clarity
– What the student is willing to take responsibility for
– Social media and its influence
– Understanding why rules matter for students
– How to work with the current generation

A refreshing, clear and practically minded workshop that moves quickly from theory into everyday practice.

The workshop can be adapted to suit your situation.
Particularly suitable for VMBO teachers and mentors as well.

For the development of the adolescent brain we work with the age range of 10 to 25. The development captured by the word ‘adolescent’ focuses on ages 10 to 15 or 16. Our group, though, the MBO student, falls in the 16 to 25 age range. We zoom in on the developments that matter for MBO students in particular. But perhaps more important still: how do we as teachers respond to those developments, and what can and cannot we reasonably expect? The other side is examined too. What do young people expect of their teachers, and how do we arrive at a good interplay between the two? Where do we find intrinsic motivation, and how do we appeal to it?

In the LAKS study ‘Vraag het de vmbo’er’, VMBO students say their own education is not challenging enough.

On 18 April 2011 the VMBO panel of the Landelijk Aktie Komitee Scholieren (LAKS), the Dutch national students’ action committee, presented its study “Vraag het de vmbo’er” (Ask the VMBO student) to the education minister, Marja van Bijsterveldt.

In the study, VMBO students say they do not find their own education challenging enough. “Excellent VMBO students are often forgotten. They are bored at school as things stand, or they want to move to HAVO. VMBO education needs to be far more challenging,” says LAKS chair Steven de Jong. The study also shows that students are very dissatisfied with the process of choosing what to study next.

In the qualitative study, which LAKS carried out among almost 800 students, VMBO students were asked their own views on matters such as safety, lesson content and challenge. Fully 70% of students said they found VMBO easy, and the VMBO diploma is not highly valued either.

LAKS argues for more practically oriented challenge in VMBO. Ultimately the aim should be to raise examination requirements in VMBO as well, so that the diploma genuinely becomes worth more, though a boost in quality is needed first. The number of unqualified teachers should also be cut back sharply. At present one in three VMBO teachers teaches without a qualification; that is far more than in HAVO and VWO.

In the third and fourth year, VMBO students grow steadily more dissatisfied with the process of choosing a course of study. “The poor state of careers guidance shows up in the high drop-out figures in MBO. There is still a lot to be gained in the choice process,” says De Jong. Careers advisers need to be closer to the student, and instead of aptitude tests there should be real conversation with the student. VMBO students in particular need good guidance.

VMBO students between 12 and 16 spend an average of 3.5 hours a day online on their mobile phones. They spend that time mainly on YouTube and WhatsApp. On a computer, these young people are online for an average of 2.8 hours a day. This emerges from research by Dialogic, commissioned by the organisers of the Dutch Media Literacy Week (Week van de Mediawijsheid).

Tanja Jadnanansing, MP for the PvdA, received the research on Friday in Hilversum at the launch of the themed week. Dialogic surveyed 541 VMBO students for the study.

According to the research, young people are in many respects not conscious enough in how they use media. 80 per cent do not check how reliable their sources are. Because of the range of media they use, 24 per cent of those surveyed are easily distracted from homework and other tasks, and 12.5 per cent have at some point bullied someone online.

Media Literacy Week is aimed at young people between 10 and 14, their parents and their schools. One aim is to teach primary school pupils and students in secondary education to be aware of the privacy risks of using Twitter and Facebook.
