‘Challenging motivation’ module at TSE
As part of the secondary education professional development range at the Twente School of Education, the module ‘Uitdagend Motiveren’ (Challenging Motivation) starts on 28 April 2011. The module works from the real, day-to-day situations of the participants, who are teachers in secondary education. We begin by looking at the participants’ own motivation for their subject and their students. That is where the foundation is laid. From that foundation we go into conversation with the student. We challenge them, and we appeal to their motivation.
The emphasis will be on motivating students within the participants’ own groups. Approaching the student positively, challenging them and motivating them are the core ideas of this module. Intrinsic motivation is the starting point: every individual carries within them a desire to grow and develop. That is a fine thing, but how do we reach that desire, and how do we appeal to it? To do so we draw on principles from coaching, such as observing objectively and thinking without judgement. Passing on knowledge and skills grows out of the connection with the student. How do we create that connection, and how do we guide them from within it?
